The dragon hung his large head. “I can’t tell you,” he said.
“Another secret?” Berry moaned.
Raina shot her a hard look. “Don’t scare him, Berry,” she scolded.
Berry took a deep breath. “Carobee, we’re here to help you,” she said. She watched the dragon close and open his eyes. It seemed like it took forever for Carobee to reply.
“I have done something terrible!” he wailed.
The five fairies looked at one another. They weren’t sure what to make of Carobee’s announcement.
“Is anyone hurt?” Raina asked bravely.
Carobee shook his head. “No, no one is hurt. But I am in big, big trouble. Sticky, gooey trouble.”
Again the fairies all shared a worried look.
“Let us help you,” Cocoa said. “We came all this way to help.”
Berry inched closer to Carobee. “Friends shouldn’t keep secrets from one another. Maybe there is something we can do.”
“I’m just so embarrassed,” Carobee moaned. “How could I do such a thing?” He glanced up at the Candy Fairies. “I was supposed to deliver barrels of my fire-spun cotton-candy material to Olivia Crème de la Crème. I wasn’t careful enough. I accidentally scorched and burned the entire batch!” He buried his head under his long leg. “I don’t know what to say to Olivia Crème de la Crème. What am I going to do? I have never been so embarrassed.”
The Candy Fairies were shocked by Carobee’s confession. They didn’t know what to say.
Berry stepped forward. “Olivia will understand,” she said.
“All those yards of cotton candy spun into fabric, ruined with one breath!” Carobee burst out.
“We can help you make up a new batch,” Cocoa said brightly. “We are Candy Fairies, you know!”
Berry looked over at Raina. She knew her friend was thinking the same thing: there could only be one explanation for why there was so much cotton-candy material requested for Sweet Stitches. Berry’s hand flew to her mouth. “The surprise competition fabric must be cotton candy!” she let out.
“Only there is no cotton-candy fabric,” Dash noted. “Now that’s a secret not worth finding out.”
“But we can change that,” Cocoa said. “Sure as sugar, we can get Carobee’s order delivered if we work together.”
Berry made a sour face. She wasn’t sure if she should keep the surprise fabric news to herself, but she wanted to help Carobee. This was a sticky, gooey secret, just like Carobee said.
